The End of an ERA
After 50 years of local history the ‘Happy Prospect’ finally ended its days
in a cloud of dust. Many locals mentioned that it was the ‘end of an era’ what
will replace it remains to be seen.
The pub had stood since Southcote was built in the early 50’s and had seen many
events over the years both good and not so good.
Many relationships for locals had been started or ended at the pub and it was
always somewhere to go to have a chat and meet friends over a pint.
The social activities will definitely be missed, with fishing, darts, football,
pool, parties and many other events being centred on the site.
Many memories gone in a cloud of dust, what a shame.
Memorial Bench
A Memorial bench has been placed in Coronation Square, in memory of Eileen
Bowsher. Eileen was a resident of Southcote and a long time member of Southcote
Residents Association and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
New Play Equipment
The play equipment in the Coronation Square park has been replaced with new
equipment costing £16,000. £10,000 came from Reading Borough Council and £6,000
from Reading Federation of Tennants and Residents' Associations.
Snow
The recent snow in January brought a flurry of snowmen throughout the estate.
However the damage to the roads in the estate from the snow and ice has taken
its toll on the road surface, and the thin tarmac on top of the old concrete road
has began to break up.
